Welcome to Mesara valley

Mesara  is the beautiful   south central valley of Crete . Mesara had particular cultural features within Cretan Greek and abroad world. Its meaning comes from the greek words <mesa sta ori> which means inside mountains but the are beautiful beaches on the west. The history of the place starts six thousand years ago, with the  Minoan civilization, a famous civilization who succeeded to travel all around the world in ancient times . The centre of Minoan civilization in Mesara was the palace of Phaistos where the famous phaistos disc was found and still can not be translated, but there are many other sites of archaeological importance, such as Gortyna where the first written laws in all Europe were found, Agia Triada which is next to the beautiful town of Tympaki , kamilari,Matala which has also except from unique beauty, a long history with hippies who had settled there from all over the world on 60's and 70's  in the existing caves  , Pitsidia, Komos that was the harbour of Minoan Civilization with many ancient buildings discovered there, and there it is said that exists an archaeological  stonepath which connects kommos beach  with the Phaistos palace, and has not been found yet. Another importance of Kommos is the myth of  an old archaeological  shipwreck  around the cape there ,which also has not been discovered yet, but old people from the region talked about it. Many exhibitions and collections of Minoan civilization are  exhibited in  the Archaeological museum of Mesara.

Besides  Mesara offers many other things to discover and see.Amazing beaches, Beautiful towns with local products such as excellent olive oil, great wines , horticulture and many others. There are excellent taverns, restaurants  , bars, coffee shops next to the sea, or inside the traditional villages and towns around, bakeries with local sweets and many other,  festivals , and welcoming nice people. Bazaars-open public markets offer fresh local products, clothes and every kind of goods, and they are every Friday in Tympaki town, and every Saturday in Moires town. It worths to visit Zaros village,  an amazing place with the lake among mountains and restaurants and coffee shops around. Nearby is the Rouvas forest of Gergeri village.
